Participation: Please contribute to the classroom environment by asking questions and participating in discussions. Your interaction will be considered when assigning borderline grades, as will improving performance throughout the course of the semester.
Classroom: I will be asking students to answer questions during class. Therefore, I highly recommend that you complete the suggested reading before coming to class. In addition, unnecessary disruption will not be allowed. This means no cell phones, no leaving class during lecture, no extraneous chatter, etc. If you know you must leave class, sit by the door to minimize disruption. If your cell phone is seen or heard during class, your next assignment will be deducted 5 points.
Grading: 30% Weekly Problem Sets, 40% Exams, 30% Final
Problem Sets: The weekly problem sets will consist of two parts. The first part will be a take-home problem set, usually due at the beginning of class the following Thursday. You are encouraged to collaborate, however your final write-up must be your own independent work. Transcribed solutions are unacceptable. The second part will be an in-class quiz given at the beginning of class the day the take-home problem set is due. These weekly problem sets as a whole will constitute 30% of your final grade.
Exams:Two exams and one final will be given during the semester. You may not use outside resources: calculators, other students, other books, etc. Each exam will constitute 20% of your total grade (40% total) and the final will constitute 30% of your total grade.
Late policy: No work will be accepted late without prior arrangement or a written excuse. However, your lowest weekly problem set will be dropped. Neither exam or final may be made up without prior arrangement or a written excuse.
Text: J. Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals
You can have either the single variable version if you don't think you are going to take Calc III, or you can have the multivariable version if you think you are going to take Calc III (and you don't mind carrying around a really big book).
Technology: Matlab will be used extensively in this class. However, I will assume that students have no previous programming experience.
