Participation: | Please contribute to the classroom environment by asking questions and participating in discussions. Your interaction will be considered when assigning borderline grades, as will improving performance throughout the course of the semester. |
Classroom: | I will be asking students to answer questions during class. Therefore, I highly recommend that you complete the suggested reading before coming to class. In addition, unnecessary disruption will not be allowed. This means no cell phones, no leaving class during lecture, no extraneous chatter, etc. If you know you must leave class, sit by the door to minimize disruption. If a cell phone rings during class, the phone will be confiscated.

Grading: | 30% Problem Sets, 40% Exams, 30% Final |
Problem Sets: | A problem set will be assigned each week, usually due at the beginning of class the following Tuesday. The set will consist of two parts. For the first part, you are encouraged to collaborate, however your final write-up must be your own independent work. Transcribed solutions are unacceptable. The second part will be pledged -- meaning no outside help from books, calculators, or other students. Please write the following statement on top of your pledged solutions "I understand and will uphold the ideals of academic honesty as stated in the Honor Code" and sign your name. These problem sets as a whole will constitute 30% of your final grade. |
Exams: | Two exams and one final will be given during the semester. You may not use outside resources: calculators, other students, other books, etc. Each exam will constitute 20% of your total grade (40% total) and the final will constitute 30% of your total grade.
Late policy: | You may submit two problem sets one class period late with no penalty. Subsequent late assignments will be penalized 25%. No work will be accepted more than one class period late without prior arrangement or a written excuse. Neither exam or final may be made up without prior arrangement or a written excuse. |

Text: | J. Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals You can have either the single variable version if you don't think you are going to take Calc III, or you can have the multivariable version if you think you are going to take Calc III (and you don't mind carrying around a really big book). |
Technology: | Matlab will be used extensively in this class. However, I will assume that students have no previous programming experience. |
Disabilities: | I will happily accommodate any needs you have based upon a disability that is registered with the office of Disability Support Services (DSS). You need to contact me ahead of time for this accommodation. You can contact DSS at 410-617-2062, or mwiedefeld@loyola.edu |
